Camp Bartle - Sawmill, Campsite Hawthorne - First Session - June 13-22
Hi everyone, As the T10 2023 Bartle Campmaster, I wanted to provide some candid communication on how we arrived at Sawmill, Hawthorn for 2023. At the troop committee meeting it was decided that we need to pay for 95 spots for Bartle (based on current signup around 75 and future anticipated signups of 20). We submitted our request for early draw and put Lonestar as our ‘only’ choice. The thought was we would get Seneca (70) and part of Pawnee (25) as was done in the past when we were much larger. The official draw was on Tuesday morning. We got a call from the HOAC/Bartle Staff informing us that they do not merging campsites if a troop fits in one campsite (no Seneca/Pawnee option). The campsite we would fit in (Mohican, Lonestar) was taken and rest of the Lonestar campsites were not big enough for our troop. The ‘only’ option was Sawmill, Hawthorn – unless we went a different session. We need to attend camp first session because we have scouts attending Philmont, Rocky Mountain, Jamboree, etc. during the other sessions.

Several of T10 leaders discussed possible options with the HOAC BSA/Bartle staff but were unsuccessful.
Sawmill is a great camp. Hawthorn is big campsite and puts us all in one campsite. It is a lot more shaded than Lonestar (good for summer temps), it is centrally located in Sawmill (easier access to all merit badges), next to the ‘intercamp trail’ that connects us to; Lone Star, the Lakefront, all Mic-O-Say activities, has a very accessible parking lot, no driving inside the camp (low dust) and is walking distance to mess hall, swimming pool, and rifle/archery ranges. Lastly, we have several folks that were commissioners at Sawmill and speak highly of the experience. And we will have some T10 and T6010 commissioners on staff there this year.

So... overall, I think it will be a great experience!! We will plan on taking a trip out to check out the campsite after the first of the year and anyone who wants to come along is welcome.
Thank you, Raj Chelluri, 2023 Bartle Campmaster T10B
